A Shared Living-Room Review

A shared living room typically serves five activities: watching TV, reading, hosting guests, children playing, and storing books or equipment. Before evaluating the layout, list every activity and note when it happens during the day.

Identifying All Activities in One Room

The main traffic route through the living room should not pass between the sofa and the TV. If it does, anyone walking to the kitchen interrupts the person watching. Place seating perpendicular to the main path, or route traffic behind the sofa instead of in front of it.

Seating Layout and Traffic Paths

When two activities happen at the same time, they need separate zones with enough distance between them. A 120 cm gap between the play area and the seating group is usually enough to prevent collisions without cutting off visual contact.

Storage That Does Not Block Movement

Bookshelves and storage units in a shared living room should sit against walls that are not part of the main circulation path. A common mistake is placing a shelf behind the sofa, which forces people to squeeze between the shelf and the wall to retrieve items. Keep storage on dead-end walls.

When Activities Overlap

Review the final layout by walking through each activity on the plan. Sit on the sofa: can you reach the remote? Stand at the bookshelf: does it block the path to the kitchen? When the layout supports all five activities without conflict, the shared living room works.

• Provide at least 90cm of clearance for main walking paths.
• Use area rugs to define social zones in open-plan spaces.
• Position guest luggage racks away from doorway swings.
• Ensure ambient lighting can be dimmed for evening relaxation.
